How to train your cat to use the toilet? This is the question most cat owners want to be answered. For cat owners, being litter box free is such a wonderful idea. But is it possible? Of course it is, but before we discuss how to train your cat to use the toilet, let us first talk about the advantages of doing so.
It’s good to have a litter box-trained cat, but some people may find it a bit costly. We all know that a litter box can be expensive. After you successfully train your cat to use the toilet, you’ll be surprised at how much you can save from your expenses. Litter boxes need to be regularly cleaned to avoid stinking up the house, but if your pet knows how to use the toilet, a little flushing is all that you need. No more mess, no more smell, no more litter boxes and cat litter and eventually more savings.
Toilet training your pet will take time, so you will need to be patient and consistent. It is very important that your pet is litter box-trained before you can train your cat to use the toilet. Initially, you have to place you cat’s litter pan on the floor inside the bathroom close to your toilet so your cat will be used to the idea of doing the deed inside the bathroom. When your cat is used to it, you can now put the litter pan in a higher level close enough to your toilet. Then after some time, you can put the litter pan on top of your toilet bowl. Make sure that you provide improvised stairs so help your cat in climbing.
Now it’s time to begin the actual transition. The first step is finding a good litter bowl. You can use improvised tuff like a large salad bowl or there are available litter bowl available in the market or online. Fill the bowl with cat litter and for a few days, use it normally like a litter box. Make sure you clean it and discard clumps of cat litter regularly. At this stage, make sure that your toilet lid is always up to make it easier for your cat. You can tape it and keep it upright to prevent the lid from accidentally crushing your cat.
After your cat begins to be comfortable with the new litter bowl, you can now begin to introduce a new step. Using a cardboard, put a hole at the center and place it snugly above your toilet bowl. Make sure this cardboard is stable enough to hold the weight of your cat. Beside from using this improvised platform, there are available litter bowl in market with a hole in it. At this stage, your cat is slowly learning to balance while at the toilet seat. The idea is to let your pet dump his poop into the hole, but eventually he would miss. Patience is needed for this to be successful, and let this be his routine for a couple of weeks or so.
As your pet gradually becomes more comfortable with it, you can eventually make the hole larger until you can actually remove the platform. You will be surprised that your cat will be able to actually use your toilet without any help. And that’s how to train your cat to use the toilet.
