Litter training kittens is not as hard as you think if you do it the right way. Of all cat problems, cat litter is the most widely complained about by cat owners. So as early in their kitten days, litter training kittens is a must.
Usually, the mother is responsible for litter training kittens. They are trained by imitating their mother. But if you only have a kitten at home or if you have just acquired a kitten from a shelter or pet store, or if you are deciding to have cat, you can immediately start litter training as early as possible.
It takes time in litter training kittens and the first thing you need is an appropriate litter box. You can purchase a litter box from your local pet store but remember that this litter box is for litter training kittens. You may ask for shallow litter boxes custom made for kittens. In choosing the right litter box, look at the side of it and pick the ones with the lowest sides. The sides should be low so that kittens can get into it and out easily. As for adult cats, the sides of the litter box should be much higher to prevent the litter from scattering.
Once you have your litter box, you should put some kitty litter and put it on a place where it can be immediately be seen. Kitty litters are available from scented to non-scented, you may ask from your regular pet store which is the best for your kitten. You can immediately start litter training kittens after their feeding time. Make sure to place the kitten in the litter box after they it. Naturally, a mother cat uses her tongue in litter training her kittens, but a warm wash cloth could be used too. You can wipe their anal area for stimulation. You can then let the paws of your kitten touch the litter to help them understand what the activity is for. This activity might not be successful initially so don’t get your hopes down. Never force the issue for the kittens might develop fears from litter boxes. The key is to repeat it immediately until it becomes a routine. Time will come that kittens will be able to use the litter box on their own. The routine is just to help them get started in becoming socially mannered pets.
In litter training kittens, you may use verbal rewards or food rewards to reinforce positive behavior. Another important thing to remember is reading body languages of kittens. If they feel like giving it a go, they would often walk to a secluded area and do the deed. In this event, you can intervene by immediately placing you kitten directly on a loiter box. Through practice and experience, the kittens will eventually be able to do the deed in properly on a litter box. Litter boxes should be placed in a private but accessible area away from their food and drink. As kittens have strong sense of smell, their litter boxes should always be clean suitable for littering.
